WHAT PAY 2 PLAY IS ABOUT:

"PAY 2 PLAY: Democracy's High Stakes" is a fun, entertaining film, which just happens to focus on the corrupting influence of money in politics and what we the people can do to fix it. We look at what it takes to run for office in this day and age. But to make it fun, we also look at how our national pastime, the game Monopoly, has created a monopoly mindset of winner takes all. And lastly, we look at the power of the people coming together and having their voices heard in the streets, through both protest AND street art.

Hello 28ers & Curious Squirrels,

Please come join us for a Potluck & Discussion on the new movement-building book called "Swarmwise," which documents the amazing and sudden rise of The Pirate Party in Sweden, which was founded on the notion of creating 'Open-Source' ethics and transparency in government policies and copyright use. Fellow 28er Joy Monhan has graciously opened up her home for our potluck and book discussion on Monday, January 23rd, 2017. Please scroll down to the bottom of the event description to discover who plans on bringing what to the festivity.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

In the Fall of 2016, Jeff Green enlisted many fellow 28ers to read this power-house book on creating modern social movements that blends decentralized anarchist approaches with traditional leader hierarchies that have clear systems of accountability. Due to competing and cramped schedules, we were never all finished "Swarmwise" at the same time or were ever able to coordinate a book discussion in advance. If you haven't read the book, and/or want to learn more about organizing, feel free join The 28ers for a discussion on "Swarmwise." All interested and passionate change-agents are welcome to attend, regardless of your opinion on The 28ers' own aims.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The author, Rick Falkvinge, details how he blended different organizational methods to create 'Swarmwise' from what worked and didn't work in his experiences with the movement activism, the I.T. community and even the Swedish Military. The last third of the book provides reasons as to why The Pirate Party has spread so rapidly as a transnational movement in northern parts of Europe. As The 28ers we also hope to discuss the limits of the Pirate Party apparatus, but in doing so, also celebrate its organizational methods and discuss how it might make for better movements.

HOW TO GET THE BOOK:

If you haven't read Rick Falkvinge's "Swarmwise," this activist-author has an entirely open-source version you can download as a .pdf for either your computer or e-reader:

The Pirate Party: The Politics of Protest

WHY DOES THE 28ERS STILL BREATHE IN STASIS?

The 28ers is now moving into its 5th year after the tragic destruction of Occupy encampment across the US in 2011 and the failure of the Berners Movement to infiltrate electoral politics in 2016. As an organization that exists in the murky sweet spot of street politics and electoral politics, The 28ers central aim has been to expand and grow by doing monthly events on the 28th of every month to call attention to the hydra-headed horrors of money in politics. And while we have insanely accomplished the latter, we've been miserable at growing outside of our original stomping grounds of Riverside. Clearly, it's time to wonder why we've have come up so short from reaching our collective aspirations.

Cheers,

Matthew Snyder

A Co-Founder of The 28ers
